The BIG DAY OUT is held every year in cities across Australia, and previously in Auckland, New Zealand. The festival takes place during the Australian/NZ Summer (Jan-Feb) and runs over a two week period to cover each hosting city. As well as featuring major international headliners, each city also add local acts to their respective band and DJ line-ups.

Since it's inception in 1992, the Big Day Out has expanded to five Australian states. These locations each year are on the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the tour ends in Perth, Western Australia. The tour begins in Auckland, New Zealand and then kicks off in Australia on the Gold Coast a few days after.
neil young 2009 big day out
In the very first year, the Big Day Out was only featured in Sydney, New South Wales.
The headlining acts for the first ever Big Day Out included Nirvana, the Violent Femmes  and Massappeal. A host of local bands were also on the bill and would feature in future  line-ups of the Big Day Out. Approximately 9,500 people were in attendance.

In 1993, such was the popularity of the first Big Day Out the year before, the festival  expanded to other Australian cities - Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth - thus, helped attract  more international acts. Iggy Pop and Sonic Youth were the headliners and Australian Bands  such as You Am I, The Clouds, The Hard Ons and Beasts of Bourbon appeared for their  second successive year. The total attendance across the four cities reached approximately  46,000 people.

The following year saw the Big Day Out expand to the Gold Coast and Auckland, New  Zealand for the first time and made the Big Day Out the premier music festival in this part of  the world. This popularity was enhanced by big headlining acts such as Soundgarden, The  Ramones (Australia only), Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, Teenage Fanclub (UK), and Primus.      (Neil Young at the BDO 2009)           The tour in total amassed a total of 120,000 people over the six festivals in 1994.

The list of Australian and New Zealand acts who make it onto the bill, sometimes aren't guaranteed to play every city. When the line-ups are announced, Big Day Out organizers usually make it known if certain bands only play specific cities on the tour.

Over the next few years leading up to the turn of the century, the Big Day Out was able to attract some of the world's biggest Alternative, Pop, Rock and DJ's as part of the tour. Artists that featured included the likes of Primal Scream, Hole, The Offspring, Rage Against The Machine, The Prodigy, Soundgarden and Supergrass. noel_gallagher_BDO_2012

The tour went on hiatus in 1998, much to the dissapointment of fans across eitherside of the Tasman Sea.

Resuming in 1999, the tour headliner's included acts such as Korn, Marilyn Manson, Fatboy Slim, the Manic Street Preachers, Ash & the Fun Lovin' Criminals. Local band favorites such as Powderfinger, You Am I and The Living End had already featured in a number of the previous BDO line-ups and still do to this day. More than 200,000 people attended the six festivals in total.

The travelling festival has re-included New Zealand as part of it's line-up for 2014.
The event next year will now start at Western Springs in Auckland. The Gold Coast event
also has a new venue, moving to Metricon Stadium & Carrara Parklands as of 2014.  Adelaide and Perth will also have new venues, subject to council approval.
